POL 2010 - Introduction to Comparative Politics

Credit(s) 3

Human political systems exhibit significant diversity, managing universal human problems with distinctive political solutions. In this course we will be examining and classifying these diverse institutions using the comparative method of politics. In particular, we will be trying to answer, or at least start to answer, a host of interesting questions: What are the universal human problems that every government has to manage, and how do different types of governments vary in their attempts to manage these problems? How do states vary in terms of their level of development (or underdevelopment) and why? Whey do some nations democratize while others have enduring non-democratic political systems? What are the origins of civil war and revolution? How does each nation’s particular history, culture, economy, and geography relate to their political systems?
