Natural Sciences, Biochemistry Major, 3+3 Dual Degree, B.A.

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has a 3+3 Dual-Degree Articulation agreement with Appalachia College of Pharmacy (ACP) that provides a pathway for motivated students to obtain both a bachelor’s degree (BA Biochemistry) and doctorate of pharmacy (PharmD) in six academic years - a course of study that typically takes eight years. Benefits to the students include but are not limited to:

  1. Elimination of two years of academic work
  2. Elimination of two years of academic cost
  3. Receipt of two degrees (BA and PharmD) upon successful completion of the program,
  4. Guaranteed admission to Appalachian College of Pharmacy upon successful completion of the BA Biochemistry curriculum at UVA Wise
  5. Accelerated entry into the workforce

Declaration and Application

Students interested in pursuing the Dual-Degree route must make an appointment with the Chair of the Natural Science Department to declare their intent to apply. The Chair will then refer the student application to the UVA Wise Pre-Pharmacy Committee for academic review and entrance interview. Upon recommendation of the Pre-Pharmacy Committee, the department will notify the Office of the Registrar to declare the major and assign an advisor. The Pre-Pharmacy Advisor will notify the ACP liaison of the applicant’s acceptance.

In order to receive a BA in Biochemistry Degree from UVA Wise, candidates must:

  1. Complete the UVA Wise Liberal Arts Core.
  2. Complete BA Biochemistry curriculum as prescribed below.
  3. Complete first two years of didactic coursework at ACP.
  4. Maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 and a minimum STEM GPA of 2.5
  5. Apply for graduation with the UVA Wise Office of the Registrar by March 1 of their second year at ACP.

Other Requirements:


Intro to Psychology (PSY 1100 ), Intro to Sociology (SOC 1100 ) and Microeconomic Principles (ECO 2050 ) are required Liberal Arts Core courses. A minimum of 24 hours of science and math courses must be taken at UVA Wise.
