Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Department of Social Sciences

Sociology is the scientific study of human social behavior-how people interact, organize, and create meaning within groups, institutions, and cultures. It relies on observation, generalization, and interpretation to understand how societies function and change.

The Sociology program offers a strong liberal arts foundation for students pursuing careers or further study in social work, counseling, education, business, government, or law. It also prepares students for graduate and professional programs in fields such as human resources, clinical sociology, organizational management, corrections, social policy, and demographics.

The major consists of 42 total credits. Of those 42 credits, 27 are required course work and 15 are elective course work. Foundational courses introduce students to the core ideas, theories, and methods of sociology; while additional requirements include coursework in key areas in the field-social class, gender, race and ethnicity, place, and organizations. The major concludes with a senior seminar.
