ELEMENTARY EDUCATION PK-6

The major is designed for candidates seeking an elementary education endorsement to teach at the PK-6 level.

Candidates are required to complete the following:

Foundational Liberal Arts Core Curriculum for General Education and Virginia Department of Education Licensure
Contextual Liberal Arts Core Curriculum for General Education and Virginia Department of Education Licensure
Major and Licensure Coursework
Endorsement Coursework for either PK-6 or Special Education or both

The Department of Education is supported in the administration of the Liberal Arts and Sciences major by the chairs of the Departments of Language and Literature, History and Philosophy, Mathematics and Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts.

Foundational Liberal Arts Core Requirements – 20-27 Hours

The following coursework is required as foundational to the Liberal Arts Core curriculum for general education.

FRESHMAN SEMINAR – All incoming first year students must take SEM 1010. Unless students have a completed Associate of Arts or Associate of Science they must take SEM 1010.
SEM 1010 - Freshman Success Seminar Credit(s): 1
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION – Students who place into ENG 1030 and make a C- or better will be awarded six hours of credit.
ENG 1010 - Composition Credit(s): 3
ENG 1020 - Composition Credit(s): 3
GLOBAL COMMUNICATION - foreign language is required for all students unless they have a completed Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree.

SPA 1020 - Elementary Spanish Credit(s): 3

FRE 1010 - Elementary French Credit(s): 3
FRE 1020 - Elementary French Credit(s): 3

QUANTITATIVE REASONING – Students may substitute MTH 1110 or MTH 1210 for MTH 1010.
MTH 1010 - College Algebra Credit(s): 3
MTH 1180 - Elementary Probability & Statistics Credit(s): 3
SCIENTIFIC REASONING – Students may substitute BIO 1010/1011 for SCI 3020 and BIO 1020/1021 for SCI 3030.
SCI 3020 - Earth & Space Sci. For Prek-6 Teach Credit(s): 4
SCI 3030 - Life Science For Prek-6 Teacher Credit(s): 4

Contextual Coursework – 21 Hours

Students pursuing the education major must take contextual coursework that meets the Liberal Arts Core requirements as well as Virginia Department of Education licensure expectations. 21 hours of coursework is required with at least one course from the self, community, nation, and world groups.
