Liberal Arts and Sciences, Elementary Education PK-6, B.A.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION PK-6

The major is designed for candidates seeking an elementary education endorsement to teach at the PK-6 level.

Candidates are required to complete the following:

  • Foundational Liberal Arts Core Curriculum for General Education and Virginia Department of Education Licensure
  • Contextual Liberal Arts Core Curriculum for General Education and Virginia Department of Education Licensure
  • Major and Licensure Coursework
  • Endorsement Coursework for either PK-6 or Special Education or both

The Department of Education is supported in the administration of the Liberal Arts and Sciences major by the chairs of the Departments of Language and Literature, History and Philosophy, Mathematics and Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts.

Foundational Liberal Arts Core Requirements – 20-27 Hours


The following coursework is required as foundational to the Liberal Arts Core curriculum for general education.

Contextual Coursework – 21 Hours


Students pursuing the education major must take contextual coursework that meets the Liberal Arts Core requirements as well as Virginia Department of Education licensure expectations. 21 hours of coursework is required with at least one course from the self, community, nation, and world groups.

Major and Licensure Coursework – 28 Hours


Courses required to meet the major and Virginia Department of Education licensure requirements.

Endorsement Coursework – 25-31 Hours


Students may choose between courses for the Pre-K through 6th Grade Endorsement or the Special Education Endorsement.

Elective Course Options To Reach 120 Hours for Bachelor’s Degree


Student must earn 120 credit hours to receive a Bachelor’s Degree. These elective coursework options are for students who need additional hours to reach 120 earned hours.
