BIO 4500 - Medicinal Plants

This course investigates the sources, biochemistry, and pharmacology of plant-derived pharmaceutical drugs and herbal medicines. Students will apply this knowledge in the context of medical consultations and safety precautions, such as potential drug interactions. A broader perspective will be fostered by analyzing the importance of medicinal plants in a global framework, synthesizing the ethnobotany, conservation, and ethical implications of these medicinal resources. There will also be a brief field component to the course, exploring local Appalachian medicinal plants.
