The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers courses in computer science, data science, management information systems, mathematics, software engineering, and statistics leading to a Bachelor of Science in the following majors: Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, and Software Engineering. Minors may be earned in Computer Science, Data Science, and Mathematics. Concentrations may be earned in Data Science and Cybersecurity. Liberal arts core courses and courses designed for students majoring in other disciplines are also provided.

Liberal Arts Core Requirements

To earn a degree from UVA Wise a student must complete six credit hours in quantitative reasoning. Typically, students begin in MTH 1010 , MTH 1050 , MTH 1180 , MTH 1210 , or MTH 2040  based upon the Registrar’s assessment of the student’s SAT/ACT scores, Advanced Placement (AP) scores, and the student’s high school record in consultation with the Department. A 1000-level course, with the exception of MTH 1180 , may not be taken for credit after a 2000- or higher-level course has been completed successfully. MTH 1010  may not be taken for credit after either MTH 1110  or MTH 1210  has been completed successfully.

Advanced Placement

Students who complete MTH 1050  with a C or better will also receive credit for MTH 1010 .  Students who complete MTH 1110  with a C or better will also receive credit for MTH 1010 . Students who complete MTH 1210  with a C or better will also receive credit for MTH 1110 .  Students who complete MTH 2040  with a C or better will also receive credit for MTH 1110  and MTH 1210 .  Further questions about assessment and placement may be directed to the Department Chair. 

Note About Double Counting Courses:

Courses may be applied towards two majors in the Department where appropriate.
