SPA 4150 - Latin American Culture Through Music

Credit(s) 3

This course provides an introduction to the interconnections between music and culture in Latin America. It will expose students to a wide range of music from the region and have as a point of departure the study of music as a cultural and social phenomenon. Special attention will be given to the significance of music in society and in relation to central concepts such as identity, nationalism, multiculturalism, ethnicity, social structures, institutions, and cultural fields. In this course, students will also engage on close readings musical texts.
