NAS 1030 - Science and Society in Appalachia

Credit(s) 4

Perhaps nowhere else in the nation is culture tied more closely to biology than in the Southern and Central Appalachian Mountains. Appalachian music, traditional medicine, and even place names are linked inextricably with the organisms that call the mountains home. And since the Appalachian region is also a global hotspot of biological diversity, there are few other places where local organisms can better showcase the breadth of ecological and evolutionary concepts central to understanding modern biology. This course will use the human history of Appalachia (10,000 years ago to present) and its tie to regional biodiversity to introduce general concepts in the biological sciences through the lens of societal issues pertinent to the region. Three hours of lecture and three hours of lab per week.
