NAS 1046 - The Poetry Gene

An introduction and exploration of human genetics that will use a combination of personal genetic testing and exercises in creative writing as a way to understand the basic principles of gene transmission and the meaning of each individual’s genetic makeup. Possible topics include the use of genetic single nucleotide polymorphisms and diary entries to explore ancestry, the existence and function of sex determination genes, the XX/XY heteromorphic chromosome system as a jumping off point to explore how sex is determined in the broader biological world and the meaning of gender amongst humanity, an exploration of the mechanisms of genes and gene expression, examine the history of how the structure of DNA was discovered and the role played by four scientists - Francis Crick, James Watson, Rosalind Franklin, and Maurice Wilkins, and the meaning of “genetically modified” and how these modifications are made.
