A minor in Appalachian Studies is available to give students an opportunity to explore the past, present, and future of the Appalachian Region in order to understand and celebrate those aspects that are unique or special, and to fit the region into the broader context of the nation and world. Effective leadership for the future of the Appalachian region as a viable environment and culture will come from those who understand the potential and the limitations of the region. Students may develop a minor in consultation with the Appalachian Studies coordinator and the advisor of the academic major, using the following guidelines:

Adherence to the college policy on minors requiring 18 credit hours at least 12 of which must be 300 level and above. Courses applied to requirements for a major may not be applied to a minor.
Courses chosen should provide a coherent approach to a well-defined educational objective. Focus may be on specific areas, such as art, literature, natural history, political philosophy, sociology, or a combination of these.
The program must be realistic in terms of course availability, staff and library resources.
Courses used for the minor normally should be chosen from the following list. Other courses, including special topics, independent and studio projects, may be approved if they can be justified as consistent with student’s specific goals. New courses appropriate for this minor may be developed and added to this list.
