Liberal Arts and Sciences, (Non-Licensure) Requirements

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Department of Education

This major is designed for students seeking a degree that DOES NOT lead to a recommendation for licensure from the Director of the Teacher Education Program at UVA Wise to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Education.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 120 semester hours for the degree. Credit hours are to be earned from the core requirements listed above with respect to students’ area of interest (Elementary Education, Special Education, or Health and Physical Education) and the professional education component (except for EDU 4945  or EDU 4943 , respectively).

Students seeking a non-licensure degree are required to complete EDU 4941 : Non-Licensure Teaching Internship-Education Special Topics (instead of EDU 4945  or EDU 4943 ). The core requirements for this program also satisfy the general education requirements described previously in this catalog.

Students considering a degree with non-licensure must receive approval from the Director of Teacher Education and the Teacher Education Admissions Committee before receiving approval for admission to the non-licensure program.

The non-licensure degree is not intended to be an avenue for students to graduate early; rather, the program was created to help students who cannot meet licensure requirements earn a degree. Students would qualify for the non-licensure route if they can demonstrate dire circumstances that would have prevented them from qualifying for a teaching license.

Requirements for Non-Licensure Degree:

  1. Attempted all required licensure assessments,
  2. Students must write and submit a formal letter of request that explains why the student is requesting to enroll in the non-licensure program to the Director of the TEP,
  3. Interview with the Director of the TEP and the Teacher Education Admissions Committee to explain the rationale for seeking a non-licensure degree.
