Appalachian School of Law Accelerated 3+3 Dual Degree Program

Students who are interested in attending the Appalachian School of Law (ASL) will have an opportunity to earn their Bachelor’s degree from UVA Wise and a Juris Doctor from ASL in only six years. Application to the Appalachian School of Law must be received by January 1 of the calendar year in which the student desires to enroll in the law school.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to participate in the dual degree agreement (DDA), students must:

  1. Obtain permission from the appropriate faculty within the Department of History and Philosophy to pursue accelerated study (after completing the application process).
  2. A student must complete 90 hours to transfer to ASL. As part of those hours, a student must complete all of their general education Liberal Arts Core requirements and all required history course credits, as outlined in #3.
  3. Students must complete their 36 hours of history major core competencies. This includes:
    1. HIS 1010  and HIS 1020  - Western Civilization I and II;
    2. HIS 1070  and HIS 1080  - US History I and II;
    3. HIS 3900  - Introduction to Historical Research and Writing;
    4. HIS 4900  - Research Seminar in History;
    5. At least 18 hours of 3000-level HIS classes, including one each in US, European, and Cross-Cultural History.

Having completed the liberal arts core requirements of the College and the required courses for a major in History, students must take additional electives to have earned at least 90 hours from UVa-Wise by the end of the third term. This will allow students to transfer a maximum of 30 hours from ASL to complete the required 120 hours for a degree from UVa-Wise.

  1. Students who wish to complete one of the Concentration areas in history (Public History or Intellectual History/Philosophy) must complete the required courses within the chosen concentration area.
    1. Students majoring in History with a Concentration in Public History must complete the basic major requirements in #3, as well as the courses required for the Concentration as outlined in the concentration area above.
    2. Students majoring in History with a Concentration in Intellectual History/Philosophy must complete the basic major requirements in #3, as well as the courses required for the Concentration as outlined in the concentration area above.
  2. Maintain a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.5 in the major and an overall cumulative GPA of 3.00 as calculated by the Law School Admission Council. This GPA must be achieved at the time of application to the DDA program and maintained throughout enrollment at the Institution.
  3. Obtain an LSAT score equal to or exceeding 153. (If LSAC changes the scoring scale for the LSAT, this minimum LSAT score will be revised accordingly.)
  4. Acceptance is considered provisional until the student submits a 3+3 Schedule Plan Form, obtained and approved by their academic advisor.
  5. GPA will be confirmed at the end of each semester. Students whose GPA falls below 3.5 in the major and/or 3.0 overall will have one semester to return to the minimum GPA. Failure to do so will trigger forced withdrawal from the program. If this occurs in the final semester prior to matriculation at ASL, this will trigger forced withdrawal from the program.

ASL ADMISSION PROCESS

  1. Complete and submit a DDA Participation Form in the freshman or sophomore years of undergraduate study (or equivalent) to the Office of Admission, Appalachian School of Law, 1169 Edgewater Drive, Grundy, Virginia 24614.
  2. Take the LSAT no later than December of the “junior” undergraduate year, and obtain a score equal to or exceeding 153.
  3. Submit the completed ASL JD application through the Law School Admission Council by January 1 of the “junior” academic year. This application includes a personal statement, a resume, recommendations, transcripts, and any other requested materials.
  4. Complete an interview with the admission staff of ASL.

Students shall be notified by phone and in writing of admission to ASL. UVA Wise will also be notified in writing of the student’s admission to the law school. Students shall receive the bachelor’s degree from UVA Wise immediately upon successful completion of the first year courses of ASL for the DDA program in accordance with UVA Wise’s normal graduation procedures. Students need to submit an official ASL transcript to the Office of the Registrar, UVA Wise, 1 College Ave., Wise, VA 24293. DDA program begin date is fall of 2020. If I student does not complete the 1L year of the Appalachian School of Law within three years of having completed their junior year at UVA Wise they will be understood as having been withdrawn from the 3+3 program and may complete their final year at UVA Wise within the College’s standard parameters.

HOW TO BEGIN THE PROCESS

  1. At the beginning of their sophomore year at UVA Wise, interested students can log on to the student portal (my.uvawise.edu). Click on the Students tab at the top of the page. Choose Electronic Student Forms from the navigation pane on the left. Complete the formal application and submit.
  2. Once submitted, you will receive an email notification that your request is being reviewed.
  3. After review is complete, you will be contacted by the appropriate department representative.

NOTE FOR NEW TRANSFER STUDENTS: This program was designed for students who would be completing the majority of their coursework at UVA Wise. Interested students will be required to earn a minimum of 45 hours at UVA Wise. We welcome all interested students.
