The major in English is particularly helpful for students who wish to pursue studies in literature at the graduate level, teach English at the secondary level, attend law school or prepare for theological studies. Combined with other appropriate studies, the major in literature is excellent preparation for the fields of medicine and business.

Major Requirements

  1. Those who wish to major in English must complete the formal application process as listed above (see paragraphs 1-3).
  2. Those majoring in English must achieve and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 in all courses in the major.
  3. Each senior must schedule and complete an exit interview with English literature faculty prior to graduation.

Required Courses


Methods and Methodologies (Language and Theory) – 3 Hours


Choose One Course From the Following:


Literary Surveys of Historical Period – 6 Hours


Literature to 1800 – 6 Hours


Literature after 1800 – 6 Hours


English Electives – 12 Hours


Choose four courses from:

  • Non-teaching majors choose four courses numbered 3000 or higher. At least one course must number 3270 or higher.
  • Teaching majors must take ENG 3400 and either ENG 4050  OR ENG 4060  and two additional courses numbered 3000 or higher.
