Licensure for Teaching a Foreign Language in Pre-K-12

Students who wish to pursue certification to teach a foreign language at the Pre-K-12 level must meet the requirements for admission and retention in the Teacher Education Program. In addition to the required courses in foreign language, the student must take the professional studies requirements for secondary grades 6-12. Students must have a GPA of at least 3.0 in 3000-level or above courses in the major to receive departmental recommendation to the Teacher Education Program.

The applicant seeking an endorsement in a modern foreign language for Pre-K-12 shall complete a major or its equivalent in a modern foreign language, including a minimum of 24 credit hours of language course work above the intermediate level. Endorsement in a second foreign language may be obtained with 24 credit hours of course work above the intermediate level.

Option One – First endorsement: 24 credit hours. Experiences shall include course work in advanced grammar and composition, conversation, culture and civilization, and literature.
Option Two – Added endorsement in a second modern foreign language: 24 credit hours. Experiences shall include course work in advanced grammar and composition, conversation, culture and civilization, and literature.

FRE 1020 - Elementary French Credit(s): 3
FRE 1030 - Accelerated Elementary French Credit(s): 3
FRE 2010 - Intermediate French Credit(s): 3
FRE 2020 - Intermediate French Credit(s): 3

Upper-Division Courses

Twenty-four hours of upper-division courses must include

FRE 3010 - Intro. French Civilization Credit(s): 3
FRE 3210 - Advanced French Composition Credit(s): 3
LAN 3820 - Methodology Of Tch Foreign Language Credit(s): 3
plus 15 credit hours of upper-division courses in French.

Spanish

Specific content courses required for teacher certification in Spanish include

SPA 1010 - Elementary Spanish Credit(s): 3
SPA 1020 - Elementary Spanish Credit(s): 3
SPA 1030 - Accelerated Elementary Spanish Credit(s): 3
SPA 2010 - Intermediate Spanish Credit(s): 3
SPA 2020 - Intermediate Spanish Credit(s): 3

Upper-Division Courses

Twenty-four hours of upper-division courses must include

SPA 3010 - Introduction to Latin American Cultures Credit(s): 3
SPA 3000 - Introduction to Spanish Cultures Credit(s): 3
SPA 3210 - Spanish Conversation in Context Credit(s): 3
SPA 3270 - Advanced Grammar & Composition Credit(s): 3
LAN 3820 - Methodology Of Tch Foreign Language Credit(s): 3
plus any 12 credit hours of upper-division course work in Spanish.

German

Specific content courses required for teacher certification in German include
