Students who are interested in attending the Appalachian School of Law (ASL) will have an opportunity to earn their Bachelor’s degree from UVA Wise and a Juris Doctor from ASL in only six years. Interested students should contact the appropriate faculty upon declaring their major at UVA Wise. Application to the Appalachian School of Law must be received by January 1 of the calendar year in which the student desires to enroll in the law school.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to participate in the dual degree agreement (DDA), students must:

  1. A student must complete 90 hours to transfer to ASL. As part of those hours, a student must complete all of their general education Liberal Arts Core requirements and at least 30 hours of Government credits, as outlined in #2.
  2. Students must complete their major core competencies. This includes:
    1. POL 1010  (Introduction to American Politics); POL 1030  (Western Heritage of Politics I);
    2. POL 1040  (Western Heritage of Politics II);
    3. at least one upper-level class listed as a course in American government NOT to be transferred from ASL;
    4. at least one upper-level class listed as a course in Political Theory;
    5. at least one upper-level class listed as a course in International Relations,
    6. an additional 12 hours of upper-level courses in Government & Foreign Affairs at UVA Wise.

      This means a total of 30 hours must be completed in the major to transfer to ASL.
  3. Obtain permission from the appropriate faculty within the Department of Social Sciences to pursue accelerated study (after completing the application process).
  4. Maintain a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.5 in the major and an overall cumulative GPA of 3.00 as calculated by the Law School Admission Council. This GPA must be achieved at the time of application to the DDA program and maintained throughout enrollment at the Institution.
  5. Obtain an LSAT score equal to or exceeding 153. (If LSAC changes the scoring scale for the LSAT, this minimum LSAT score will be revised accordingly.)
  6. Acceptance is considered provisional until the student submits a 3+3 Schedule Plan Form, obtained and approved by their academic advisor.
  7. GPA will be confirmed at the end of each semester. Students whose GPA falls below 3.5 in the major and/or 3.0 overall will have one semester to return to the minimum GPA. Failure to do so will trigger forced withdrawal from the program. If this occurs in the final semester prior to matriculation at ASL, this will trigger forced withdrawal from the program.
